And while you’re here, here are some of our favorite things to do with 48 hours free in Edgartown.

For the Adventurous Spirit

Visit the red clay cliffs of Aquinnah, a National Historic Landmark, and one of the most breathtaking views on the East Coast shoreline. Visit alpacas at the Island Alpaca Farm, where you can meet the adorable animals and pick up goods made from their soft fibers. Hike or bike our incredible nature trails, discover the enchanting oasis of Polly Hill Arboretum, or picnic in Mytoi Gardens. As for beaches, you can’t miss South Beach in Edgartown. Just care to take a walk? The Franklin is within walking distance of a bike shop, Bad Martha Farmers Brewery & Pizzeria, Cozy Corner Cafe, and Town MV restaurant, and other Edgartown favorites.

For the History Buff

Immerse yourself in the right history of the island at the Wampanoag Indian Museum, housed in a historic Wampanoag Family homestead. Walk the Martha’s Vineyard African American Heritage Trail, with 30 sites dedicated to the formerly unrecognized contributions made by people of African descent to the history of the Island. Stroll through nearby Oak Bluffs to see the historic Flying Horses Carousel, the nation’s oldest platform carousel. During the summer months, take a tour of Martha’s Vineyard’s five diverse lighthouses. And don’t miss the Martha’s Vineyard Museum to explore artifacts and learn about the island’s role in New England’s whaling era.

For the Cultural and Art Aficionado

A longtime muse of artists and authors, Martha’s Vineyards is home to many local galleries, including the Old Sculpin Gallery, Night Heron Gallery, The Granary Gallery, and more. Care to see a film? Check out the Film Center and the seasonal offerings of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival.

Don’t miss the island’s many hardworking farms, where you’ll find the freshest food around. Try The Grey Barn Farm in Chilmark for award-winning cheese, North Tabor Farm in Chilmark for delicious produce, or Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown for a little bit of everything, including melt-in-your-mouth baked goods. (Pro Tip: Should your travels bring you to Martha’s Vineyard from June to October you’ll want to make sure to check out the West Tisbury Farmers Market where you can shop from dozens of our local farms and food purveyors all in one place!)
